Huntsville, Alabama, February 5, 2019 – Hexagon’s Safety & Infrastructure division has released a new software application that aids electric utilities in determining the location of faults more quickly and accurately. Launched at DistribuTECH 2019, Hexagon’s Intergraph InService Fault Location helps utilities improve outage restoration by cutting fault location time from hours to minutes.
Repairing outages is among the biggest cost for utilities. Up to half the time spent repairing an outage can involve finding the fault. Sending crews to patrol circuits can be time-consuming and expensive. InService Fault Location automates this process to improve outage restoration. The application calculates the location and characteristics of faults, allowing utilities to address problems sooner.
“Utilities are under pressure to reduce the duration of outages,” said Anna Throneberry, vice president and general manager for U.S. utilities and communications, Hexagon’s Safety & Infrastructure division. “By automating key processes, InService Fault Location helps utilities overcome this challenge and make drastic improvements in outage restoration.”
With InService Fault Location, utilities can determine and display the location of faults by type and magnitude. It cuts time spent in rural areas searching for faults and enables utilities in urban areas to make faster switching decisions. The application works for both sustained and momentary outages.
InService Fault Location is part of Hexagon’s Intergraph InService suite and available for version 9.4. InService provides the core capabilities for an advanced distribution management system (ADMS) to monitor and operate the distribution system. Integrating with third-party systems (such as SCADA, AMI and CIS), InService delivers operational intelligence to the enterprise by providing grid analysis and optimization, tracking outages, restoring service and managing field crews.
Hexagon’s Safety & Infrastructure division has pioneered the development and application of location-based systems for electric, communications, water and gas companies for decades. The company supports hundreds of utilities and communications customers around the world with solutions for network engineering, network operations and other business functions.
Alectra Utilities, the second-largest municipally owned electric utility in North America, has selected Hexagon’s Safety & Infrastructure division to merge the utility’s four separate geographic information systems (GIS) into a single, enterprise GIS built on Hexagon’s Intergraph G/Technology software.
Alectra Utilities was formed from the merger of Enersource, Horizon Utilities and PowerStream in 2017, followed by the acquisition of Brampton Hydro, to become the second largest municipally-owned electricity utility in North America based on total number of customers served. The project includes merging the four utilities’ distinct systems into a single, common data model and symbology; refactoring the numerous system interfaces and converting the GIS data, which will result in a single, enterprise system.
“Alectra Utilities needed an enterprise-level system-of-record to manage all of our GIS and network data,” said Mike Matthews, senior vice president of network services for Alectra Utilities. “Consolidating on Hexagon’s Intergraph G/Technology will result in streamlined business processes, standardized engineering practices, improved data quality and better service for our customers.”
With Intergraph G/Technology as its enterprise GIS and network model management solution, Alectra Utilities will expand its ability to monitor, report on and improve reliability and power quality. With a single network operating model that feeds single interfaces into other critical systems, like SCADA, AMI and CIS, the utility can reduce costs and improve efficiency.
“We’re honored that Alectra Utilities selected Hexagon after a 3-year competitive process,” said David Armstrong, vice president and general manager for Hexagon’s Safety & Infrastructure division in Canada. “This is the fourth large utility in Canada to commit to Hexagon’s utility GIS software after competitive review, joining ATCO Electric, FortisAlberta and Toronto Hydro. We’re committed to bringing proven, trusted and innovative technology solutions to our customers.”

Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure will feature its network model management solutions at the DistribuTECH Conference and Exhibition, the largest annual event for the electric transmission and distribution sector. Hexagon’s software helps electric utilities improve the quality and availability of data for planning and operations.
The solutions include Intergraph G/Technology, which enables operators to maintain a definitive source of reliable, location-based information describing the network and its connectivity, and Intergraph NetWorks, which provides secure, real-time access to the network model across different business functions. Hexagon’s software takes in data from disparate sources, including GIS, databases, spreadsheets, catalogs and more; imports, validates and synthesizes the data for modelling; and then transforms and exports it with CIM capabilities for use in operational systems.
Clean network data is critical for grid planning and customer-friendly operations. However, utilities struggle with inaccurate, incomplete or duplicate data and siloed data analysis. Hexagon’s network model management solutions provide a consistent way to maintain an accurate record of asset location and information, which can be more easily consumed by multiple applications, including ADMS, OMS and SCADA. With a single version of truth for the network model, utilities can improve planning and operations and field productivity and safety.
“Network model management is a major topic for electric utilities,” said Dean Galvez, chief information officer for Snohomish County Public Utility District (SnoPUD), which provides power to more than 330,000 customers north of Seattle. “Our partnership with Hexagon has helped us meet this challenge. Hexagon’s network model management solutions provide the definitive source of valid network data to feed our GE-Alstom ADMS. The technology has been in production for more than three years and is a mission-critical component of our operational enterprise systems.”
The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) is currently undertaking collaborative research in distribution-side network model management with its Distribution GIS and Grid Model Data Management project. Hexagon is assisting EPRI in the definition of standards that will allow for better integration. Hexagon will demonstrate its software at booth 3019 from January 23-25 at DistribuTECH in San Antonio, Texas.
Hexagon Safety & Infrastructure helps utilities and communications companies achieve greater reliability, increase efficiency and fulfill the expectations of customers, shareholders and regulators.
