Bentley Systems’ Acceleration Fund Announces Launch of The Cohesive Companies, Advancing Infrastructure Digital Twins to Improve Asset Performance

13.7.2020 15:30

Anchored by the Acquisition of Cohesive Solutions, Leading North American Integrator of IBM’s Maximo

EXTON, Pa. – July 13, 2020 – Bentley Systems, Incorporated, a leading global provider of comprehensive software and digital twins services for advancing the design, construction, and operations of infrastructure, today announced that its Acceleration Fund has launched The Cohesive Companies, a wholly owned subsidiary, anchored by the acquisition of Atlanta-based Cohesive Solutions. The new business venture will include the services team from Bentley’s AssetWise business and the offerings of Bentley, Cohesive, and IBM’s Maximo to support the digital transformation of infrastructure owner-operators. The Cohesive Companies will act as a digital integrator to help infrastructure asset owners upgrade their enterprise environments to leverage digital twins—digital representations and simulations of a physical asset, synchronizing digital context (current existing conditions), digital components (engineering content), and digital chronology (lifecycle change management). Infrastructure digital twins can empower asset operators with immersive visualization and analytics visibility to predict and optimize performance.

Cohesive Solutions is the largest North American reseller of IBM’s Maximo enterprise asset management (EAM) software. With a successful track record of delivering integrated EAM solutions for owner-operators in utilities, energy, and facilities sectors, Cohesive Solutions’ domain expertise and consulting capabilities can now be extended to advance EAM to infrastructure digital twins.

As digital integrators for infrastructure asset performance, The Cohesive Companies’ unique charter is the convergence, through digital twin cloud services, of digital engineering models (ET), with IT and OT, for infrastructure and facilities assets. Asset performance digital twins can provide continuous operational insights, enhanced through machine learning, for reliability, efficiency, compliance, safety, resilience and decision support to adaptively sustain and advance fitness for purpose.

Noah Eckhouse, SVP Bentley Systems, and CEO, The Cohesive Companies, said, “Infrastructure asset owners know their success in going digital is based on both technology as well as experienced and dedicated resources for change management. I’m excited to fully meet the opportunity for asset performance digital twins with Bentley Acceleration Fund’s substantial commitment to this digital integrator venture. Building on Cohesive Solutions’ 25-year history while launching Cohesive Asset Performance with a large team of seasoned Bentley AssetWise consultants, The Cohesive Companies have hit the ground running, ready to drive change and deliver positive outcomes!”

George Lowry, President, Cohesive Solutions, said, “The Bentley Acceleration Fund’s digital integrator initiative for advancing infrastructure—by combining world-class software with best practices consulting, in going digital for asset performance—completes the reach of our mission, from the start, at Cohesive Solutions. Our founders are delighted to now extend our scope, as a long-standing IBM Business Partner, to include advancing Maximo with Bentley’s digital twin cloud services.”

Pierre de Wet, GM and VP, Cohesive Asset Performance, said, “The formation of The Cohesive Companies, as digital integrators, created an opportunity to bring my global team of AssetWise services professionals into the mix, with a specific focus on asset information, performance, reliability, and analytics. I’m excited to join Noah and George to broaden our digital integrator capabilities and to offer a deeper range of services for AssetWise.”

Terrence O’Hanlon, Founder and Chairman, Reliabilityweb.com and producer of MaximoWorld, said, “Cohesive Solutions builds upon a long history of success and expertise around IBM Maximo Enterprise Asset Management implementations, with a track record of improving asset performance. The combined solutions that will now be uniquely offered by The Cohesive Companies—adding AssetWise and digital twin cloud services to Maximo EAM expertise—hit it out of the park for owner-operators to realize critical organizational objectives!”

Bentley Systems Turns AASHTO Student TRAC Bridge Contest into a Virtual Event

11.6.2020 15:08

Originally Scheduled to Present in Kansas City, Middle and High School Students from Several States Pivoted to Showcase Bridge Design Projects in a Virtual Setting

EXTON, Pa.June 11, 2020 – Bentley Systems, Incorporated, a leading global provider of comprehensive software and digital twin cloud services for the design, construction, and operations of infrastructure, and the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO), a nonprofit, nonpartisan association representing highway and transportation departments in the United States, this year presented the annual Transportation and Civil Engineering (TRAC) contest for middle and high school students in a virtual setting. Originally scheduled to be held during AASHTO’s spring meeting in Kansas City, organizers re-invented the competition as the “AASHTO Virtual TRAC Showcase” as a result of COVID-19 social-distancing restrictions.

The Bentley-sponsored AASHTO National Bridge and Structure TRAC Bridge Challenge invites students from 7th-12th grades to design innovative bridge projects using Bentley applications. This year, 18 finalist teams were selected. However, when AASHTO made the difficult decision not to hold the event in person, Bentley partnered with AASHTO to host the “Virtual TRAC Showcase” on June 3. While only 12 of the 18 teams could present in the online forum, it served as an opportunity to recognize students for their hard work, allowing them to present virtually their projects in front of parents, teachers, sponsors, state departments of transportation, and AASHTO members.

The winning teams from Maryland, Virginia, Michigan, and Mississippi, with names including “The Suspension Is Killing Me,” “Bridge O Matics,” and “Cable Stayed Mustangs,” presented their bridge projects designed using Bentley software that included MicroStation, OpenRoads, and ContextCapture. The 10-minute presentations allowed each team to demonstrate how they designed the bridges and built models of their designs with balsawood. Each member of the 12 teams received a certificate and gift card provided by Bentley Systems, Michael Baker International, and TopoDOT to acknowledge the students for their outstanding work.

Francois Valois, Bentley’s vice president for civil engineering, said, “The role of civil engineers is critical to transportation infrastructure. The hands-on experience of the TRAC program introduces students to civil engineering concepts and processes and inspires them to imagine a future career in engineering. I’m proud that AASHTO, Bentley, and the DOTs came together to provide this opportunity for the students to present their projects virtually and get the recognition that they deserve.”

Linda Clifton, AASHTO TRAC program manager, said AASHTO designed the program for use in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) classes to introduce students to transportation and civil engineering. “America’s transportation industry has a huge demand for well-qualified civil engineers. TRAC’s goal is to get middle and high school students exposed to and excited about a career in civil engineering. We see TRAC as an investment in today’s youth, to ensure that America has the highly-skilled workforce it’s going to need for years to come.”

If this year’s TRAC teams are any indication, the program has met its stated goal. One of the 12th-grade students said, “I started the program with an interest in civil engineering and ended with a love for it. TRAC was probably the best way to prepare me for a future as a civil engineer.”

Bentley Systems Adds Infrastructure Industry Experience to Digital Twin Consortium

20.5.2020 15:59   Underscores Commitment to Advancing Open-Source Platform for Digital Twins

EXTON, Pa.May 20, 2020 – Bentley Systems, Incorporated, a leading global provider of comprehensive software and digital twin cloud services for advancing the design, construction, and operations of infrastructure, has joined Digital Twin Consortium at the “Groundbreaker” level.

Digital Twin Consortium was formed by non-profit trade association Object Management Group® with Ansys, Dell, Lendlease, and Microsoft, creating a global ecosystem of users who are accelerating the digital twin market and demonstrating the value of digital twin technology. As the authority in digital twins, the consortium brings together industry, government, and academia to drive consistency in the vocabulary, architecture, security, and interoperability of digital twin technology. Digital Twin Consortium aims to influence the direction of digital twin technology development, become the focal point for digital twin thought leadership, and promote, evolve, and refine digital twin best practices and benefits.

As a groundbreaker member of the consortium, Bentley will help set de facto technical guidelines and taxonomies, publish reference frameworks, develop requirements for new standards, and share use cases to maximize the benefits of digital twins. Bentley will be working alongside other early innovators, including the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory and New South Wales Government.

Bentley’s collaboration with Digital Twin Consortium and its global ecosystem of digital twin users underscores its commitment to advancing an open-source platform for digital twins, which began with its release of iModel.js at its Year in Infrastructure 2018 Conference.
iModel.js is the first and only open source library available on GitHub for accessing, creating, visualizing, analyzing, and integrating the data associated with infrastructure digital twins.

Bentley has since expanded its digital twin offerings to include:
iTwin Services, which enable digital information managers to incorporate engineering data created by diverse design tools into a living digital twin with no disruption to their current tools or processes; and
PlantSight, a digital twin for process industries, which brings together plant data and operating information into a single “pane of glass” accessible from anywhere 24/7 using a standard web browser.

Adam Klatzkin, vice president, business development – iTwin Services for Bentley Systems, said, “Infrastructure professionals are quickly catching on to the significant gains that can be realized by digital twins. We believe that no one vendor will be able to satisfy the myriad requirements and potential applications of digital twins that will emerge over the next five years. No one knows what a digital twin is going to be five years from now, but it is a safe bet that it will be connected to more systems than is possible today. Users want the flexibility to change as requirements change and as new things become possible. In software terms, that means being open. It is important for organizations to take an open approach when they are selecting digital twin technologies to work with. Open wins.”

“We are delighted that Bentley will bring its infrastructure industry and open-source expertise to our global ecosystem of Digital Twin Consortium members,” said Dr. Richard Soley, executive director, Digital Twin Consortium. “We look forward to working with Bentley to advance the use of digital twin technology across industries.”

Bentley’s collaboration with Digital Twins Consortium and its global ecosystem of digital twin users underscores its commitment to advancing an open-source platform for digital twins, which began with its release of iModel.js at its Year in Infrastructure 2018 Conference.
iModel.js is the first and only open source library available on GitHub for accessing, creating, visualizing, analyzing, and integrating the data associated with infrastructure digital twins.

Indiana School Wins Grand Prize at 28th Annual Future City Competition

19.3.2020 15:10   Bentley Systems Sponsors the Annual Competition, which Challenges Middle School Students to Design a Future City and Overcome Engineering Challenges

WASHINGTON
March 19, 2020 – Bentley Systems, Incorporated, a leading global provider of comprehensive software and digital twin cloud services for the design, construction, and operations of infrastructure, and DiscoverE, a network of volunteers that introduces students, parents, and educators to engineering and provides hands-on engineering experiences, announced that Yemoja, a city of the future designed by students from Norwell Middle School in Ossian, Indiana, won the Grand Prize at the 2020 Future City Competition.

The competition finals, held at the Hyatt Regency Washington in Washington, D.C., is organized by DiscoverE and sponsored in part by Bentley. Sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students from 1,500 schools in more than 40 regions, as well as teams from Canada, have imagined, designed, and built cities for the 2019-2020 Future City Competition. This year’s theme, Clean Water: Tap into Tomorrow, challenged students to identify an urban water system threat and develop a futuristic solution to ensure a reliable supply of clean drinking water.

Students from Norwell Middle School, including Jordyn Xayyachack, Teagan Lesley, Madeline McCabe, Nevada Lenwell, Morgan Batdorff, Connor Reed, Cassandra Coyne, Eli Randol, and Lukas Mashuda, paired with educators Bill Bostain, Stephanie Scott, and Bonnie Dickey as well as volunteer mentor Albert Bostain, won a trip to Space Camp at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Ala., as well as $7,500 provided by Bentley, for their school’s STEM program.

Maggie Dressel, program manager of Future City, said the Norwell Middle School team won due to its innovative approach to tackling a problem faced by many real-world cities. “In the course of their research, the team identified plastics as one of the issues,” she said. “In an effort to combat that, they did an in-school campaign on plastic pollution and collected 5,000 plastic bottle caps, melted them down, and used the material to create the model.”

Bentley CIO Claire Rutkowski gave a presentation during the finals that discussed the challenges future cities will face, including urbanization, climate change, water and food scarcity, and population growth. She said some innovations on the way that will improve future cities and help address challenges include digital twins to help design and manage assets, 3D printing to quickly produce individual components and entire buildings, and new high-tech materials, such as concrete that can heal itself through bacteria that generates calcite as it gets wet, or sidewalks that generate power through the kinetic energy of foot pressure.

Rutkowski also had advice for the budding engineers in the room. “Four out of five of you, by the time you graduate from college, will be doing a job that hasn’t even been invented yet,” she said. “Work hard, and don’t be afraid to be the one who steps out and says, ‘Hey, why don’t we try making a sidewalk that creates electricity?’ Be creative and innovative.”

Bentley Systems Announces the Acquisition of GroupBC, UK Leader in Cloud Services for Construction Information Management

11.3.2020 16:59

Advancing Project and Asset Common Data Environments (CDEs) through Digital Twins

LONDON, UKMarch 11, 2020 – Bentley Systems, Incorporated, a leading global provider of comprehensive software and digital twins services for advancing the design, construction, and operations of infrastructure, today announced the acquisition of GroupBC, a leading UK SaaS software innovator. For over twenty years, GroupBC’s and Bentley’s software solutions have been deployed for complementary purposes to improve project and asset information management. The transaction results from GroupBC’s expansion agenda, and Bentley’s investment appetite, for international growth opportunities stemming from the UK’s national initiatives for major infrastructure investment and towards infrastructure digital twins.

GroupBC’s CDE solutions, BC Projects and BC Enterprise+, have been widely applied in the UK for information management respectively across construction and asset estates. Largely due to the UK’s substantiated ROI experience and its global thought leadership, CDEs have become increasingly availed globally in “going digital” for capital projects and resulting assets. In 2019, the UK’s (BS 1192) construction project information management guidelines were largely adopted within the global standard ISO 19650.

Also in 2019, in its inaugural study of the overall market for Collaborative BIM, ARC Advisory Group ranked Bentley’s ProjectWise system as #1 worldwide. The new opportunity is to build on ISO 19650, and GroupBC’s UK information management experience, to advance collaborative BIM, through “evergreen” digital twins, to span infrastructure lifecycles. In combination, Bentley’s iTwin Services will now be leveraged to uniquely connect GroupBC CDEs and ProjectWise CDEs. Through semantic alignment and change synchronization, the resulting digital twins cloud services will securely federate – fully enabling 4D mixed reality and analytics visibility – previously separate CDEs for construction and engineering.

Keith Bentley, Chief Technology Officer for Bentley Systems, said, “Our iTwin cloud services, taking advantage of iModel-based solutions for interoperability, are ideal for federating CDEs. This enables us to assure that the users of our BC SaaS services will benefit from further extending the value of their project and asset information through digital twins. With the help of our new GroupBC colleagues, we will now be able to better serve engineers, contractors, and owners by bringing together their collective IT (information management), OT (operational technologies including reality modeling), and ET (engineering models). I am confident that the resulting improvements in project and asset performance will be consistent with the UK’s demanding but welcome expectations for new ROI breakthroughs from digital twins.”

Simon Horsley, UK regional executive for Bentley Systems, said, “Our many UK users, projects, and owners in common with GroupBC will gain a lot from our joining forces to advance CDEs through digital twins. I have been tasked by Bentley management to help the UK to continue to lead the world in going digital for infrastructure advancement, and our new offerings and colleagues from GroupBC bring essential momentum as we pool resources to meet our market’s expanded ‘infrastructure revolution’ requirements. I particularly welcome to Bentley Systems GroupBC’s co-founders Sanjeev Shah and Stephen Crompton, and CEO Wes Simmons.”

Sanjeev Shah, co-founder of GroupBC, said, “This is a hugely exciting day for our shared accounts and for both our workforces moving forward. The opportunities which arise from bringing our two companies and their respective product portfolios together are enormous, as is the global reach which Bentley can now add for us. Working together we will be even better able to support, through ‘going digital,’ construction and asset lifecycles.”

Stephen Crompton, CPO and co-founder of GroupBC, added, “Bentley is going to provide a great new home for our products to thrive in. GroupBC have always promoted an integrated, best-of-breed approach, and being able to complement our leading software solutions with existing best-of-breed products from Bentley presents a uniquely exciting opportunity for us and our user organizations, opening the door for unparalleled integration between our solutions and bridging the gaps between design, construction and ongoing asset information management.”

Wes Simmons, CEO of GroupBC, said, “Our founders and I would like to thank our equity partner YFM for their visionary support over the last five years. For our GroupBC team, customers, and partners, joining Bentley Systems ensures a future of continued growth, including beyond construction information management through broadly federated digital twins, and international expansion. Here’s to BC CDE and digital twins advancement!”
